MEET NELLIE

Joining the family business

Growing up, I was surrounded by all things decorating and design. When I was 7, my father founded our design firm James Michael Howard. Shortly after my mother opened our retail division of stores called Mrs. Howard/max & company, which has five locations across the Southeast. In addition to managing and buying for our Jacksonville Beach location, I am a lead designer for the firm. My personal style is a reflection of my coastal Southern upbringing, with a fresh take on timeless design and an appreciation for the classics.

After being raised in the back of my parents’ shop, I don’t think I could avoid decorating if I tried. Every day I am surrounded by beautiful fabrics, furniture, artwork and more. I travel to the furniture markets multiple times a year so I can test out upholstery for myself so I can confidently tell clients what’s good and what’s not. Providing the best level of customer service and satisfaction is my highest priority. I strive to guide my clients to finding a style that is not only beautiful, but one that works for their lifestyle.

MY HOME LIFE

When I’m away from the office, I’m with my family. My husband Joe and I have two young boys – Joe Jr. and Liam. My boys keep me busy and my hands full. It’s also given me perspective on how to decorate practically for young families!

White sofas always look great in a photo but a toddler views it as the perfect backdrop for a red popsicle or crayon.
